What is Green Hydrogen?

Green Hydrogen is a method of generating hydrogen using renewable energy sources with no carbon emissions rather than conventional energy sources that produce harmful emissions to the environment. Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced using electrolysis by splitting water (H2O) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) using electricity that is provided by renewable energy.

Why use Green Hydrogen?

Hydrogen is a very versatile energy carrier that can be used in power generation, transportation, industry, heating, and cooling. Green hydrogen is also a great asset for decarbonization, as its versatility allows us to use it as a suitable and clean replacement in applications that require fuel or conventional energy sources, and where electrification alone may not be feasible or cost-effective, such as industry and long-haul transportation. Hydrogen is also a great energy carrier, which allows us to store energy in the form of hydrogen to be converted later, with hydrogen acting as a clean fuel for our applications. It is also suitable as a backup power source and for remote application, where access to grid electricity is limited or unreliable.

Hydrogen also allows us to store excess generated renewable energy, which gives greater grid balance and flexibility. This allows for greater integration of other renewable energy sources into the energy mix as well, such as PV and wind, especially with their use in as the electricity provider for the production of green hydrogen. There is a growing interest in green hydrogen all around the world, and it presents great economic opportunities for both countries and industries, as it is a suitable renewable energy source that can be a clean replacement in several applications, and can stimulate economic growth and job creation. Kawar Energy is one of the first companies in Jordan to lead in the field of Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia production. Aligning with Jordan’s strategic goals for renewable energy, the company recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to pave the way for green hydrogen projects in the kingdom, and to begin providing green hydrogen solutions to its clients.
